Army begins raising five swift Integrated Battle Groups along the northern frontier

New Delhi, July 2: The Indian Army on Wednesday initiated the formal raising of five Integrated Battle Groups along the frontline with China to substantially enhance tactical combat readiness. These newly configured formations are specifically engineered to react and execute strikes against designated positions within twenty-four hours of receiving operational directives. Stationed across the strategically sensitive northeastern border states of Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh, the new outfits will operate directly under the command structure of the Mountain Strike Corps to manage territorial defense.

The structural transition introduces a leaner operational model, upgrading the military framework developed under the previous Cold Start Doctrine after the 2001 Parliament attack. According to defence sources, each specialized formation will be commanded by a Major General-rank officer, with five such leaders already posted to steer the administrative setup.

“The creation of these battle groups represents a vital pivot toward localized, rapid-response capabilities tailored specifically for high-altitude warfare,” a senior military official stated. The official affirmed that the structural evolution relies on existing defensive units rather than new recruitment inductions, ensuring immediate tactical integration.

The compact, self-sufficient units will merge diverse military branches, including infantry, armor, artillery, signals, air defense, and logistical support, under a unified command. Each formation will maintain an operational strength of approximately 5,000 personnel, positioning them as a larger force than a traditional brigade but smaller than a full division.

The long-pending modernization plan received critical administrative clearance on July 1 with the finalization of the government sanction letter for the Mountain Strike Corps. Former Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi declared earlier that the strategic approval would fundamentally transform northern border management. Military analysts asserted that the complete raising process, backed by a dedicated Fire Support Group armed with long-range artillery, is on track for completion by mid-2027.
