NEW DELHI, JULY 31: Parliament complex witnessed active protests as opposition lawmakers gathered at Makar Dwar to seek clarification from Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the security response to student demonstrations on July 20. Members from various political groups assembled during the morning session holding placards to inquire about the minister’s absence from legislative proceedings following the ‘Sansad Chalo’ march organized over the 2026 NEET examination paper leak.
Addressing the situation, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge affirmed that the official handling of the student gathering required immediate oversight. “Pellet gun fire was used against our youth, against our students,” Kharge asserted, adding that “Either this happened with the authorisation of Home Minister Amit Shah, or it happened without his top-down direction. Both scenarios reflect the irresponsibility of the Home Minister or the Prime Minister.”
In tandem with the political discussion, Parliament successfully passed the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, following its clearance in the Rajya Sabha. The updated legislation introduces stringent measures to mitigate examination malpractices, establishing a dedicated Special Task Force alongside Special Fast Track Courts to ensure expeditious judicial trials. The passage in the Upper House followed an extensive debate in the Lok Sabha centered around educational reforms and administrative oversight.
