Amritsar, August 1: The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) has formally appealed to the Central government to review its stance on keeping the Kartarpur Corridor closed, emphasizing that the issue directly impacts the spiritual sentiments of the global Sikh community. The apex gurdwara body issued the statement after Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh informed Parliament that no decision has been taken to resume operations along the passage linking India with Gurdwara Sri Darbar Sahib in Pakistan.
Reiterating the profound historical value of the shrine, SGPC President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami asserted that visiting the site remains a deeply cherished aspiration for devotees. He noted that Gurdwara Sri Darbar Sahib holds immense reverence as the historic location where Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji spent his final years imparting core spiritual principles.
Highlighting the diplomatic and cultural dimension of the passage, Dhami maintained, “The Kartarpur Corridor acts as a bridge of goodwill between the people of India and Pakistan, and its religious and humanitarian significance must be recognized.” Addressing concerns regarding border management, he affirmed, “National security remains a priority, but these requirements can be adequately managed through robust arrangements without curtailing the religious rights of pilgrims.”
The SGPC leadership stated that the prolonged suspension has led to widespread disappointment among the diaspora. The Sikh body urged the Union government to assess ground conditions promptly, put suitable security mechanisms in place, and facilitate the early resumption of pilgrimage travel.
