Rohtak, August 23: Rohtak Congress MP Deepender Hooda responded to widespread criticism regarding his comments following the death of former politician Sajjan Kumar, stating that he never referred to the late figure as a role model nor harbored any such sentiment. The controversy arose after Hooda offered condolences acknowledging Kumar’s public connection and contributions to Delhi’s development, drawing sharp condemnation from political leaders across Punjab.
Addressing queries regarding his statement, the Rohtak MP maintained that his words were being misrepresented by political opponents seeking to create division. Hooda affirmed that his family shares a centuries-old bond with the Sikh community, declaring that they have consistently offered support during key struggles, including the recent farmers’ movement.
Responding to allegations of undermining the historical pain of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, Hooda asserted that his position remains completely aligned with the demand for justice. He stated that a grave injustice occurred during the 1984 violence, maintaining that those responsible must face strict legal punishment. Political figures across parties in Punjab, including representatives from the AAP, BJP, and Shiromani Akali Dal, had previously criticized the initial remarks as deeply insensitive to the victims’ families, while state Congress leadership noted the comments represented an individual perspective.
