CHENNAI, AUGUST 22: The Tamil Nadu Government has officially issued work orders to secure nearly 1.28 lakh gold rings for its upcoming newborn welfare initiative. The initial batch of 1,28,499 rings carries an estimated cost of Rs 220 crore under the newly minted Maternal Uncle Gold Ring Scheme. Families of children born in state-run hospitals since June 22 will qualify for the benefit, aligning with the birthday of Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay.
The state selected two major jewelry retail chains to fulfill the order under a strict 70:30 distribution ratio. Joyalukkas will manufacture 89,949 rings, while Kalyan Jewellers will provide the remaining 38,550 units. The rollout is scheduled for September 15 to coincide with the birth anniversary of Dravidian leader CN Annadurai.
An official statement explained the administrative logic behind the massive procurement process:
“Following the government order to supply 4,41,667 gold rings weighing one gram each, 11 companies participated in the tender on July 14 by Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation and submitted their price details through the TN Tenders portal.”
Financially, the state has earmarked a massive budget of Rs 755.83 crore to cover a full year of supply, totaling over 4.41 lakh rings. While individual rings currently value around Rs 14,850 based on market rates, the government agreed to adjust payments dynamically based on real-time gold valuations. The program originally served as a core campaign promise by the TVK party during the April Assembly election cycle.
The government outlined the broader societal goals of the initiative in an official release:
“Thaimaman Gold Ring Scheme is being implemented to strengthen the people’s trust in the healthcare services of the Tamil Nadu Government, commemorate the birth of a child born in government hospitals, and to celebrate the joy and importance of motherhood.”
