Amritsar, Sept 20: The five Sikh high priests assembled at the Akal Takht Secretariat in Amritsar on Sunday and announced the excommunication of Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee member Amarjit Singh Chawla and Additional Head Granthi Malkit Singh from the Sikh Panth.
The pronouncement was declared from the highest temporal seat by Acting Jathedar of the Akal Takht and Jathedar of Takht Kesgarh Sahib, Kuldeep Singh Gargaj. The action against Chawla, who is also a senior Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) leader, follows a criminal complaint registered at the Anandpur Sahib police station involving allegations of sexual assault. In the same matter, Additional Head Granthi Malkit Singh faced allegations regarding the transmission of explicit messages.
The high-level meeting was convened by Acting Jathedar Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, alongside Harmandir Sahib Granthi Kewal Singh, Takht Damdama Sahib Jathedar Tek Singh, Akal Takht Granthi Gurbakhshish Singh, and Panj Pyare representative Mangal Singh. Following the deliberations, the clergy formally declared both individuals severed from Panthic affiliations.
