Patiala/Mohali, 6 February 2025: Over seven years after an assault accused allegedly faced custodial torture at the Mubarikpur police post, Dera Bassi police have registered a case against Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Sahib Singh of Sirhind, Patiala.

Singh, then posted at Mubarikpur, had in 2017 booked four individuals—Gurjant Singh, Surjant Singh, Nonu, and Money, all from Kheri village in Dera Bassi—under charges of assault, rioting, and violations of the Arms Act. Following Gurjant’s arrest, the ASI allegedly assaulted him in custody.

Gurjant’s counsel moved court, citing custodial torture, prompting judicial intervention. The court directed a medical examination, which confirmed multiple injuries sustained after he was taken into police custody. He also approached the Punjab State Human Rights Commission the same year, leading to an independent inquiry.

A superintendent of police (SP)-level officer conducted the probe, revealing discrepancies between Gurjant’s medical reports before and after his arrest. Based on these findings, Mohali Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Deepak Pareek ordered the registration of an FIR against ASI Singh.

Already under suspension, Singh has now been booked under IPC Sections 323 (intentionally causing hurt) and 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means) at the Dera Bassi police station. Authorities have yet to arrest him.
