Chandigarh, 2 March — A Chandigarh court has sentenced Naresh Kumar, a municipal corporation employee, for accepting a ₹2,500 bribe in 2019. Additional District and Sessions Judge Ashwini Kumar also imposed a ₹20,000 fine on the convict, who was arrested following a vigilance operation.

Kumar was caught red-handed on August 17, 2019, while accepting the bribe from Ajay, a contractual employee in the MC horticulture wing. Ajay, previously assigned to the medical officer health (MOH) wing, alleged that Kumar demanded money to facilitate his transfer back to that department. He lodged a complaint with the vigilance department and provided a call recording as evidence.

Following the complaint, a trap was set near the Seva Bharti building in Sector 29, where Kumar was apprehended with the bribe money in his possession.

While delivering the sentence, the court condemned corruption as a “disease like cancer,” stating that it has deeply infiltrated society. “Many see it as normal and not immoral, which is disturbing. If leniency is shown, it may send the wrong signals,” the judgment noted.
