Canada Implements Extra Security Checks

Toronto, 20 November 2024, The Government of Canada has introduced temporary security inspection regulations, requiring additional checks for passengers traveling from Canada to India.

The measures, enforced by the Canadian Air Transport Security Authority (CATSA), may cause inconvenience to travelers, Transport Minister Anita Anand announced on Tuesday.

Passengers have been advised to arrive at airports at least four hours before departure to accommodate the enhanced security procedures. “These temporary safety regulations are necessary and may lead to delays,” Anand stated, urging travelers to plan accordingly.

The new measures come amid strained relations between the two nations. Recently, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) accused Indian agents of involvement in organized crime and extortion within Canada. While Canadian authorities have not explicitly linked the security checks to these allegations, the timing suggests a potential connection.

CATSA, which oversees passenger and baggage screening, has confirmed that all travelers to India will undergo these additional inspections. The Canadian government has yet to provide a timeline for how long the regulations will remain in effect.

This latest move adds to the diplomatic friction between India and Canada, which has seen heightened scrutiny over security concerns in recent weeks.
