Chandigarh, August 4: Punjab Cabinet Minister Lal Chand Kataruchak urged the Central Government to initiate diplomatic engagement with Canadian authorities to resolve the post-graduation work permit issue confronting Indian students in Brampton.
Addressing the situation, the Minister noted that students enrolled in 2024 at Portage College have completed their two-year academic programs, yet administrative policy revisions in Canada have resulted in the withholding of their work permits.
Expressing deep concern for the affected youth, the Minister declared, “This is not merely an issue concerning a few students, but a question of the nation’s self-respect and the future of our youth.”
Reports indicate that several students, including a significant number of young women, have been protesting outdoors in challenging weather conditions following the permit delays. Families across districts such as Pathankot and Gurdaspur have expressed anxiety regarding the situation.
Outlining the state administration’s position, Kataruchak stated, “The Punjab Government is continuously pursuing this matter at its own level and is taking every possible step.” He added that since international diplomatic dialogue falls under central jurisdiction, prompt communication with Canadian officials would help ensure a smooth resolution for the students.
