Shambu Border, 15 December 2024: Efforts to resolve the stalemate between the central government and protesting farmers gained momentum as Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav met Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal at the Khanuri border on Saturday. Dallewal, who has been on a hunger strike for 20 days, is demanding action on farmers’ grievances.

Accompanied by DIG Mandeep Singh Sidhu and SSP Nanak Singh, DGP Yadav urged Dallewal to end his hunger strike, citing the critical risk to his health.

“Your life is far more valuable than any protest,” Yadav said after the meeting.

He assured that efforts were underway to create a conducive environment for talks between farmers and the Centre.

Officials from the Union Home Ministry, including Director Mayank Mishra, were also present during the visit.

Mishra emphasized the government’s intent to address the farmers’ concerns, referencing directives from the Supreme Court. “We are here to listen to the protesting farmers and work toward a resolution,” he said.

The ongoing protest at the Shambhu-Khanauri border, active for 10 months, has also seen growing solidarity from Haryana farmers, further amplifying calls for negotiations. BKU leader Gurnam Singh Charuni is expected to visit the border soon to check on Dallewal’s health and assess the situation.

The farmers’ agitation continues to put pressure on the central government, with expectations mounting for constructive dialogue to resolve the prolonged issues.
