Chandigarh, 15 December 2024: The National Lok Adalat, organized by the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) in Chandigarh under the supervision of the National and State Legal Services Authorities (NLSA and SLSA), disposed of 2,792 cases on Saturday. The event saw 15 benches, led by serving judicial officers, handling a wide range of legal disputes.
A significant portion of the resolved cases involved cheque bounce matters under Section 138 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, where 2,229 cases were settled, recovering ₹1.6 crore. Motor accident claim cases also saw major outcomes, with ₹9.8 crore awarded in compensation through the resolution of 70 disputes.
The benches addressed various other cases, including 38 matrimonial and family disputes, 120 civil suits and rent cases involving ₹32 lakh, 76 execution cases with claims totaling ₹4.12 crore, and eight criminal revision petitions settling an amount of ₹1.07 lakh.
Besides, they resolved 29 criminal miscellaneous cases, 30 civil miscellaneous matters, five civil/rent appeals, and 19 domestic violence cases.
Traffic challans were a notable category, with 1,630 fines settled, resulting in the realization of ₹1.6 lakh. The Lok Adalat also addressed pre-litigative matters, resolving 667 cases valued at ₹80 lakh through the Permanent Lok Adalat Services (PUS).
Further, labor courts settled four disputes involving ₹11 lakh, while the State and District Consumer Commissions resolved 64 cases, and the Debt Recovery Tribunal (DRT-III) disposed of 189 cases.
Arbitration, guardian and ward, and other legal issues also featured prominently in the day’s proceedings, underlining the effectiveness of the Lok Adalat in delivering swift and amicable resolutions.
