Chandigarh, July 7: Widespread rain and thundershowers are set to lash large parts of Punjab and Haryana over the coming week, with meteorologists predicting heavy downpours in several areas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced that while scattered rainfall is expected until July 12, the probability of intense heavy rainfall remains exceptionally high between July 7 and July 9.
An weather official, commenting on the upcoming weather pattern, declared, “Conditions are highly favorable for the monsoon to advance further into the remaining pockets of both states.” This expected advancement comes as the northern limit of the monsoon remains stationed along a line passing through Jamnagar, Udaipur, Ajmer, Jhunjhunu, Hisar, and Bathinda, having already covered most of the region by July 3, except for a few districts like Fazilka, Muktsar, Sirsa, and Fatehabad.
The impending wet spell follows a period of highly contrasting precipitation across the two neighboring states. Recent data shows that Punjab enjoyed a significant 35 percent surplus, registering 30.9 mm of rain against its long-period average of 22.9 mm, whereas Haryana faced a 24 percent deficit. Over the last 24 hours, the region experienced standard monsoon activity, bringing gusty winds and showers to districts such as Amritsar, Ludhiana, and Gurdaspur, while skipping several Haryana districts including Rohtak and Ambala.
