Himachal Pradesh Sees 15.7% Surge in Trout Production

Shimla: The Himalayan hill state of Himachal Pradesh has achieved a remarkable increase of 15.7% in trout production for the year 2023-24, as announced by Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu.

“The total trout output rose from 1,170.50 metric tonnes in 2022-23 to 1,388 metric tonnes this year, marking a significant jump from the 913.50 metric tonnes produced in 2021-22,” he said.

The Chief Minister praises it’s government’s commitment to bolstering the rural economy, stating that thousands of families in the state depend on fisheries for their livelihoods.

Currently, 742 families are involved in trout production. To support these communities, the government is developing policies aimed at enhancing fish production and strengthening the economic stability of fishermen, he said

He credited the rise in trout production to the combined efforts of the fishing community and government initiatives.

“This increase is a testament to the dedication of our fishermen and the supportive measures implemented by the government,” he noted.

The Chief Minister mentioned that trout farming has reached commercial levels, with Himachali trout increasingly sought after in five-star hotels in Chandigarh and Delhi, particularly from the Kullu and Mandi districts.

The rising popularity of trout farming is also enhancing tourism in the state. “With advanced farming methods and growing market demand, trout production is set for further expansion, benefiting both farmers and the state,” the CM added.
