New Delhi, November 2: The opposition INDIA bloc on Sunday intensified its confrontation with the BJP-led Central Government, accusing the ruling party of compromising electoral transparency and weakening democratic institutions. At a major rally organised at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi under the banner of ‘Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao’, several opposition leaders demanded accountability over alleged irregularities in electoral rolls and questioned the functioning of the Election Commission of India.

Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, alleging that electoral manipulation had taken place and warning that those responsible would eventually face legal scrutiny.

Addressing thousands of supporters, Gandhi said the opposition would continue its campaign against what it termed ‘vote chori’ and would pursue the matter through constitutional and legal channels. He asserted that political power could not provide permanent protection against accountability and maintained that the country’s democratic framework must prevail over individual political interests.

Gandhi also targeted Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, claiming that he would ultimately be removed from office and face legal proceedings over the allegations raised by the opposition. He said the opposition intended to challenge the alleged irregularities through institutional and constitutional mechanisms.

The Congress leader argued that the controversy surrounding electoral rolls, voter deletions and the revision process had raised serious concerns about the credibility of elections. Referring to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, he questioned the alleged removal of voters from electoral records and demanded greater transparency in the conduct of electoral exercises.

He maintained that the Election Commission must function independently and that no institution entrusted with safeguarding democracy should be perceived as favouring any political organisation.

Gandhi described the rally as a united political movement to protect citizens’ voting rights, constitutional safeguards and democratic accountability, asserting that the campaign was not limited to the interests of any single political party.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge also addressed the gathering and accused the BJP leadership of weakening democratic safeguards. He alleged that the rights and representation of Dalits, women and young voters were facing serious challenges and called for stronger protection of constitutional institutions.

Kharge demanded the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and reiterated that the opposition would not abandon its campaign until its concerns regarding electoral transparency were addressed. He emphasised that every eligible citizen must be allowed to exercise the right to vote without discrimination or interference.

The rally also witnessed the participation of several prominent INDIA bloc leaders, reflecting a united opposition effort to build pressure on the Centre over electoral reforms and the functioning of the Election Commission.

Former Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, National Conference president Farooq Abdullah, PDP president Mehbooba Mufti, CPI(M) leader M.A. Baby, CPI general secretary D. Raja, NCP (SP) leader Supriya Sule and Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut were among those present.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav described Ramlila Maidan as an important centre of democratic and political movements in the country. He said the participation of a large number of people reflected the opposition’s determination to challenge the BJP politically and defend democratic values.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused the BJP of attempting to influence electoral processes in her state and appealed to citizens across communities and political affiliations to unite in defence of democratic institutions.

She called for collective resistance against what she described as attempts to undermine the electoral rights of ordinary people, while emphasising the need to protect the independence of constitutional bodies.

RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav compared the opposition’s campaign against alleged electoral irregularities to the Mahabharata, describing it as a struggle between ordinary citizens seeking to protect their voting rights and those accused of compromising democratic principles.

Former Jammu and Kashmir Chief Ministers Farooq Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti also joined the opposition gathering, underlining the participation of regional political parties in the nationwide campaign.

The INDIA bloc leaders reiterated their demand for the removal of the Chief Election Commissioner and withdrawal of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, arguing that the exercise required greater transparency and safeguards to prevent the exclusion of eligible voters.

Meanwhile, the BJP strongly criticised the opposition rally and dismissed the gathering as an attempt to create political controversy. BJP president Nitin Nabin reportedly accused Rahul Gandhi of making irresponsible remarks and attempting to generate instability through allegations against constitutional institutions.

The ruling party rejected the opposition’s accusations, setting the stage for another round of political confrontation between the two sides.

Despite the sharp criticism directed at the BJP leadership, Rahul Gandhi maintained that the opposition’s movement would remain peaceful and rooted in constitutional principles. He said the INDIA bloc would continue raising questions about electoral transparency and would seek accountability through democratic institutions rather than violence or confrontation.

The Ramlila Maidan gathering has emerged as another significant episode in the continuing political battle between the BJP and the INDIA bloc, with electoral transparency, the independence of the Election Commission and the protection of voting rights becoming central issues in the opposition’s campaign.

The rally is expected to intensify the political debate over electoral reforms and institutional accountability, with the opposition seeking to turn its ‘Vote Bachao, Desh Bachao’ campaign into a broader nationwide movement.
