Ranchi, August 5: Eighteen individuals have tragically lost their lives and several others sustained injuries after widespread monsoon showers were accompanied by fatal lightning strikes across several districts of Jharkhand. Official records indicate that most victims were actively engaged in paddy transplantation and agricultural labor in exposed fields when afternoon storms battered the region.
Giridih reported the maximum impact, where ten individuals, including four teenagers, succumbed to atmospheric strikes at separate locations, while nine people undergoing medical care continue to receive treatment for severe burn injuries.
Tragic incidents occurred in multiple regions, claiming Kadarun Khatoon in Garhwa, Sanjay Bhuiyan in Chatra, Pushpa Devi in Palamu, and both Shivnath Oraon and Upendra Oraon in Latehar’s Surli village.
Dumka district also reported multiple casualties, identifying Altamuni Marandi, Babulal Hembrom, and Rohit Kunwar among those struck down during farming duties.
Weather authorities confirmed significant rainfall across the state, with Kanke logging the highest precipitation at 76 mm, followed by Lohardaga with 46 mm and Ranchi with 35 mm.
The India Meteorological Department affirmed that active storm conditions will persist, cautioning residents across multiple districts that heavy rain and severe lightning hazards are expected through August 8.
