New Delhi, June 13: The defence ministry announced on Saturday that Lt Gen Dhiraj Seth will take over as the next Chief of the Army Staff. Currently serving as the Vice Chief of Army, the senior military leader will assume the top position on June 30, following the retirement of the incumbent chief, Gen Upendra Dwivedi.
An alumnus of the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla, Lt Gen Seth was commissioned into the Armoured Corps in December 1986. Throughout a military career spanning nearly forty years, the officer has gained wide-ranging experience across operational, strategic, capability development, and institutional areas. His leadership roles include commanding an Armoured Regiment in the desert sector, an Armoured Brigade in the Western Theatre, and a counter-insurgency force in Jammu and Kashmir.
The incoming chief has held multiple major formations during his tenure. As a Lt General, he led the strike formation known as the Sudarshan Chakra Corps, and later served as General Officer Commanding, Delhi Area, where he managed key national and international military engagements alongside ceremonial responsibilities. After his promotion to Army Commander, he oversaw both the South Western Command and Southern Command, rendering strategic oversight across critical theatres for over two and a half years. The ministry noted that his various strategic and staff appointments have significantly guided operational planning, force management, and capability development across the institution.
