Chandigarh, June 19: Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann laid the foundation stone of the 37.93-kilometer-long Dhussi Bund Link Road project in the Shahkot constituency, aiming to resolve long-standing flood risks and transform the regional travel network. The infrastructure project, detailed at an estimated cost of ₹61.82 crore, is designed to serve a dual purpose as both a vital transit corridor and a strengthened embankment shield along the Sutlej River. The administration indicated that the upgrade will benefit approximately 15,000 to 16,000 residents across 15 rural villages who have historically faced significant logistical disruptions during the monsoon season.

The project connects the Shahkot-Moga-Rampur Road with the Gidderpindi Dhussi Bund, effectively acting as a bypass to alleviate vehicular congestion on the existing Shahkot-Moga and Lohian-Makhu routes. Administrative officials noted that the structural design ensures smooth transportation for agricultural workers, general commuters, and school buses. Rajya Sabha MP Sant Baba Balbir Singh Seechewal and other senior dignitaries attended the ceremony to mark the commencement of construction.

“This important road, to be constructed along the Sutlej River, will have a total length of 37.93 kilometres,” Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann stated during his address to the gathering. He maintained that the regional population has managed under the persistent threat of seasonal flooding for a long period, noting that previous administrative efforts fell short of completing key rural infrastructure needs. “The construction of this road on the Dhussi Bund will further strengthen the embankment along the Sutlej River and serve as a strong shield against flood-related risks for the local population,” the Chief Minister asserted.

Beyond local transit improvements, the state leadership connected this project to a wider provincial developmental agenda, noting that the administration has closed 19 toll plazas across the state to relieve financial pressure on standard commuters, yielding daily savings of ₹70 lakh. The Chief Minister declared that public resources are being redirected into structural upgrades, including expanding canal water systems and establishing local healthcare facilities. He affirmed that the current governance framework prioritizes executing high-quality projects within strict timelines to facilitate state-wide economic growth.
