Chandigarh, June 20: The Punjab Government has designated more than ₹1,200 crore for the 2026-27 financial year to support the Widowed and Destitute Women Pension Scheme, reinforcing its social security infrastructure. Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Dr. Baljit Kaur announced the funding roadmap, declaring the administration’s intent to bring maximum eligible beneficiaries into the security fold. She asserted that the policy serves as a critical mechanism to provide stability and confidence to families navigating unexpected economic vulnerabilities.

The allocation follows the recent distribution of over ₹305 crore under the framework through the month of May. Administrative records indicate that more than 6.91 lakh women throughout the state are actively enrolled in the program, which is structured to offer sustained financial relief. The department stated that the financial criteria are designed to prioritize lower-income households, ensuring that state resources directly assist those experiencing substantial economic challenges.

“The Punjab Government has earmarked more than ₹1,200 crore during the financial year 2026-27 for the effective implementation of the scheme,” Dr. Baljit Kaur declared. She affirmed that the primary objective is to guarantee that benefits reach the maximum number of eligible women across the state. “The scheme serves not only as financial assistance but also as a source of dignity and confidence for thousands of women facing difficult circumstances,” the Cabinet Minister maintained.

To qualify for the assistance, applicants must be widowed or destitute women below 58 years of age, though the program also accommodates unmarried women aged 30 years and older. The state has established an annual family income ceiling of ₹60,000 to maintain targeted distribution. The Minister asserted that ensuring economic security for vulnerable women remains a vital component of the government’s broader social progress strategy under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann.
