CHANDIGARH, Oct. 10, 2024: Police have dismantled a major NRI Marriage Bureau fraud ring, arresting two key members and detaining 15 young men and women involved in the operation.

The gang, led by a Canadian-based NRI, Pradeep Singh, along with his wife and daughter, had been scamming persons by promising marriages in Canada, according to the police.

The fraudulent scheme involved charging victims $500 (₹45,000) for the false promise of arranging marriages abroad, with the gang reportedly swindling 15-20 people each day, an official said.

Acting on secret information, police from Police Station 6 conducted raids, seizing over two dozen bank accounts and mobile phones connected to the operation, he said.

The accused, Vishal and Sanjay, have been arrested, and further investigations, including call detail records of the confiscated phones, are underway, he said further.

Authorities expect more significant developments as the investigation continues, he added.
