Ludhiana, May 23: The Ludhiana Police have issued a comprehensive public advisory following reports that cyber criminals are distributing malicious phishing links disguised as digital membership drives for a viral social media organization, law enforcement officials confirmed.
The security alert was initiated after both the Punjab Police and Ludhiana Police detected a surge in suspicious, virus-infected links being transmitted to mobile devices across the district. According to investigators, fraudsters are capitalizing on the rapid online popularity of a digital group known as the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP). The fraudulent messages are sent via WhatsApp and contain targeted slogans such as “The country’s calling for a change in the system, the time has come” and “Big opportunities for youth” to trick users into opening the attachments.
“If someone accidentally becomes a victim of such cyber fraud, instead of panicking, immediately dial the cyber helpline number 1930,” Ludhiana Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma stated in an interview. He noted that filing a report in a timely manner significantly increases the likelihood of freezing the compromised funds and recovering the stolen capital.
To maximize public outreach, the Ludhiana Police released an instructional video on their official social media handles featuring policeman Amarinder Singh, who explained that clicking the unauthorized links grants scammers immediate remote control over the target device. Once the phone is compromised, the hackers extract banking credentials, passwords, and personal data to drain savings accounts and illicitly secure high-value loans in the victim’s name.
The localized scam coincides with broader international developments surrounding the satirical digital outfit. The group’s founder, Abhijeet, who is currently based in Boston, recently stated that he faces potential legal actions upon returning to India after the organization’s official account on X was restricted domestically. The parody account had briefly outpaced major traditional political organizations online, amassing over 19 million followers within a five-day window.
Commissioner Sharma urged residents to maintain strict digital hygiene and resist emotional appeals found on social media platforms.
“Ludhiana police will continue to spread awareness regarding these phishing links so that people do not fall prey to the cyber criminals,” Sharma added.
