Chandigarh, 8 December 2024: The Punjab State Election Commission announced December 21 as the date for Municipal Corporation elections. The announcement was made by State Election Commissioner Raj Kamal Chaudhary during a press conference in Chandigarh.

The elections will cover five Municipal Corporations—Phagwara, Amritsar, Patiala, Jalandhar, and Ludhiana—as well as 43 Municipal Councils. Voting will take place from 7 am to 4 pm, using EVMs.

A total of 37.32 lakh voters, including 19.55 lakh male and 17.75 lakh female voters, will decide the fate of candidates in 381 Municipal Corporation wards and 598 Municipal Council wards. Strict security measures have been implemented to ensure smooth polling.

The announcement follows prolonged delays and legal proceedings.

Earlier, the Punjab and Haryana High Court directed the state government to announce the election schedule within 15 days.

The government appealed to the Supreme Court, which rejected the plea and ordered elections to be conducted within eight weeks.

The model code of conduct has been enforced across Punjab and will remain in effect until the election process concludes.
