Chandigarh, 2 January 2025: The Punjab Transport Department is moving forward with a significant plan to contract out state bus stands as part of efforts to enhance revenue, improve maintenance, and ensure cleanliness, Transport Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar said following a meeting with departmental officials in Chandigarh.
Minister Bhullar stressed the need to increase revenue by meeting the set targets, as achieved in the previous year, and maintaining high standards of bus stand upkeep.
The state government will begin contracting bus stands, aiming to streamline management and boost revenue through private involvement, he said.
Besides, the Transport Minister outlined a target to expand government bus services throughout the state, especially on routes currently dominated by private buses. He called for the introduction of services in areas with limited government-run buses, particularly to benefit women who are entitled to free bus travel. Bhullar directed officials to identify such routes within 15 days.

The minister also announced plans to add new buses to the Punjab Roadways and PRTC fleets in 2025 and stressed the importance of addressing tax defaulters.
He directed the Transport Commissioner’s office to take prompt action on recovery measures to ensure financial discipline.
Furthermore, the minister called for improvements in public service efficiency, ensuring punctual and reliable transport services for the public.
