New Delhi/Chandigarh, 13 December 2024: Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh initiated a discussion in the Lok Sabha on India’s Constitution, marking 75 years since the Constituent Assembly completed its drafting.
He praised the Constitution as more than just a legal document, describing it as a true reflection of the aspirations of the people.
In a pointed remark directed at the opposition, Rajnath Singh took aim at those who, according to him, “carry a copy of the Constitution in their pockets,” implying that this attitude stemmed from what they had learned from their ancestors. Many speculate that this remark was aimed specifically at Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
Singh reiterated that India’s Constitution laid the foundation of real democracy, balancing both the state’s duties and citizens’ rights.
He accentuated its role in fostering cooperative democracy while ensuring national unity. Singh added that some individuals have wrongly dismissed the Constitution as merely a colonial legacy or a good idea.
He lamented that certain narratives have been shaped to suggest that the Constitution is a product of only one political party, overlooking the contributions of several individuals in its creation.
