28 December 2024: Young Nitish Reddy’s determined maiden international century guided India to a solid 358 for 9 at the close of play on day three of the fourth Test against Australia on Saturday. Reddy’s unbeaten knock of 105 runs off 176 balls was pivotal in rescuing India, who were struggling at 191 for 6 in reply to Australia’s first innings total of 474.

Coming in with India at a precarious position, 310 runs behind Australia and five wickets down, the 21-year-old Reddy formed a crucial 127-run partnership for the eighth wicket with Washington Sundar, who made 50 off 162 balls. This stand ensured India avoided the follow-on and made significant progress, reducing the deficit to 116 runs by stumps.

Reddy reached his three-figure mark with a lofted shot over mid-on off Scott Boland, a moment made even more special by the presence of his father at the MCG.

Earlier in the day, India, resuming at 164 for 5, lost Rishabh Pant for 28 and Ravindra Jadeja was trapped lbw for 17, leaving India in a vulnerable position before Reddy’s heroics steadied the innings.

At stumps, India’s total of 358 for 9 kept them in the contest, with Reddy’s performance providing a glimmer of hope.
