Amritsar, May 24: A Punjab Police Assistant Sub-Inspector was shot and killed by unidentified motorcycle-borne gunmen early Sunday morning while traveling to his station in the Amritsar district, law enforcement authorities confirmed.
The deceased officer, identified as ASI Joga Singh, was a native of Ghaniye Ke Bangar village in the Batala area of Gurdaspur district. Singh was actively deployed within the Traffic Wing of the Amritsar Police Commissionerate. Investigators stated that the attack occurred at approximately 6 a.m. along the Fatehgarh Churian–Majitha arterial road while the officer was operating his personal scooter.
According to preliminary ballistic assessments, the assailants ambushed the official roughly one kilometer ahead of the Majitha municipal boundary, opening fire from close proximity.
“Two unidentified assailants riding a motorcycle intercepted his scooter and opened fire at close range,” a police official noted, adding that Singh suffered fatal bullet entry wounds to the waist and the left side of his chest.
The officer collapsed from the critical trauma at the scene before emergency medical technicians could administer stabilizing care. The perpetrators immediately fled the location following the execution of the shooting, prompting senior commanders to cordon off the highway and activate localized search grids to establish their identity and capture them. Law enforcement authorities maintained that an investigation is underway to determine whether the targeted killing stems from personal enmity or professional retaliation linked to his service duties.
