AMRITSAR, DEC 28 – Punjab Police on Saturday arrested two individuals linked to a grenade attack on the Islamabad police station in Amritsar on December 17. The incident, which occurred in the early hours, caused panic but did not result in any injuries.
Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav announced that the arrests stemmed from an operation conducted by the Special Operation Cell in Amritsar, targeting a narco-terror module with connections to foreign handlers. “Gurjeet Singh from Dande village in Amritsar and Baljit Singh from Chhapa in Tarn Taran have been apprehended. These individuals were responsible for the grenade attack on the Islamabad police station,” Yadav stated in a post on X.
Police recovered 1.4 kilograms of heroin, a hand grenade, and two pistols during the operation. “Further investigations are underway to expose the complete network,” the DGP added.
The attack, reported at approximately 3:15 a.m., sent shockwaves through the area. Authorities classified it as a deliberate assault, and the DGP convened a meeting in Amritsar that day to evaluate the law and order situation. He directed local officers to strengthen security measures and take decisive action against those responsible.
The incident is part of a worrying pattern of grenade attacks on police establishments in Punjab. Two days later, a similar assault occurred in Gurdaspur district. On December 30, three suspected Khalistani terrorists allegedly involved in the Gurdaspur attack were killed in an encounter in Pilibhit, Uttar Pradesh, during a joint operation by Punjab and Uttar Pradesh Police.
The arrests underscore ongoing efforts to combat narco-terror activities and safeguard Punjab from rising threats, officials said.
