CHANDIGARH, MAY 11 — The Chandigarh Union Territory administration launched a large-scale operation on Monday to clear illegal encroachments in Manimajra, also known as Sector 13. The drive follows a strict mandate from the Supreme Court, with the deadline for clearing the identified areas set for Tuesday.

Anti-encroachment teams, equipped with heavy machinery, began removing unauthorized structures and temporary stalls early in the morning. To maintain law and order and prevent any potential disruptions, the administration deployed a significant police force throughout the sector. Officials stated that the drive is part of a broader effort to restore public land and adhere to judicial orders regarding urban planning.

“The administration is acting in compliance with the directions provided by the apex court,” a senior official stated. He affirmed that the drive would continue until all illegal occupations in the designated zones are removed. He further noted that the authorities had previously issued notices to occupants to vacate the land voluntarily.

Police officials maintained that the situation remained under control despite initial resistance from some local shopkeepers and residents. They declared that the presence of security personnel was a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of the demolition crews and the public.

Administrative representatives affirmed that the cleared land would be fenced off immediately to prevent future encroachments. They declared that the UT administration is committed to meeting the judicial deadline and will provide a status report to the court following the completion of the operation.
