Amritsar, April 24: An associate of foreign-based gangster Mann Ghanshampuria was injured in a police encounter during a weapon recovery operation in Mehta on Tuesday, officials confirmed.
The suspect, identified as Germanjit Singh alias Jammu of Mehta, had been arrested earlier in connection with the February shooting of a motorcycle parts trader.
“He had disclosed during interrogation that a Glock pistol was hidden near the 23 Meel canal area,” said Aditya S Warrier, Superintendent of Police (Investigations), who was present at the scene along with other senior officials.
Warrier said the police took Germanjit to the canal for the weapon’s recovery.
“He pushed the officers, pulled out the pistol, and opened fire in an attempt to flee,” Warrier noted. “The team retaliated in self-defence, and he was shot in the leg.”
He was later admitted to a hospital, while police recovered the Glock pistol along with a magazine and one live round.
Police believe Germanjit was involved in the February 13 shooting of Baldev Singh, a trader from Mehta Chowk, and his associate Amanbir Singh.
The two were attacked by bike-borne gunmen while at Singh’s shop on Jalandhar Road. Investigators said Baldev had received extortion threats from Ghanshampuria roughly three months prior to the shooting.
Shamsher Singh, SHO of Mehta police station, added that Germanjit is also wanted in a separate January case, in which a youth was shot in Chananke village.
Earlier, on February 25, police had arrested another associate of the gang, identified as Rohit of Mehta.
He too was injured in a police encounter and was found carrying a revolver and two live cartridges.
Police said investigations are ongoing to uncover further links to the Ghanshampuria gang and other possible extortion attempts in the region.
