Hoshiarpur, July 3 — A man and his two young daughters were killed when the roof of their rented house collapsed early Thursday morning amid heavy rainfall in Ahiyapur village near Tanda town in Punjab’s Hoshiarpur district.
The incident occurred around 5:30 am, police said, when torrential rain led to the sudden collapse of the structure. The deceased were identified as Shankar, 40, a native of Bihar, and his daughters — Shivani, 13, and Pooja, 4.
Three other members of the family, including Shankar’s wife and two other daughters, were seriously injured in the collapse and are currently undergoing treatment.
Villagers rushed to the site and helped pull the victims from the rubble before authorities arrived. “It was a heartbreaking scene. We tried to rescue them as quickly as possible,” said one local resident.
Police and emergency services later reached the spot and are investigating the cause of the collapse. Initial reports suggest prolonged rain may have weakened the structure.
The district administration is likely to provide assistance to the affected family and has urged residents in similar rented or old constructions to take precautionary measures during the ongoing monsoon season.
