Tarn Taran, September 4: Gurmel Singh, the Congress block president of Patti in Punjab’s Tarn Taran district, was gunned down by unidentified armed men on Wednesday, police said.

Within hours of the killing, gangsters Doni Bal, Prabh Dasuwal, Afridi Tut and Kaushal Chowdhury claimed responsibility in a social media post. They alleged Singh had acted as a police informer and blamed him for providing information that led to the arrest of gangster Afridi.

In their statement online, the gangsters accused Singh of forging ties with rival groups and said he was preparing to share further details with police.

Law enforcement officials have launched a probe into the killing and are verifying the authenticity of the gangsters’ claims. Security has been tightened in Patti and surrounding areas to prevent any flare-up.
