Chandigarh, 7 October 2024: The Punjab government has taken major steps to launch the long-awaited 24-hour water supply project in Ludhiana and Amritsar, following its initial implementation in Patiala.
The government has approved the tender process for pilot projects in both cities, with tenders set to be released this month and project completion expected within three years, according to reports.
This initiative aims to supply canal water by constructing new water treatment plants and control rooms.
Moreover, it will enhance storage capacity and lay pipelines for canal water distribution in all areas.
The pilot project will provide 24-hour water supply to 10,000 households each in Ludhiana and Amritsar, with plans to expand the program based on its success, the report said.
Meanwhile, a separate project worth Rs 1,900 crore is also in progress to transport canal water to storage tanks in these cities. Initiated in 2021, most of this work is nearing completion, with collaboration from the World Bank to facilitate canal water supply to all areas.
In Patiala, the 24-hour water supply project is 70% complete under the central government’s Amrut-1 scheme, with a target completion date of March 2025.
The project, costing Rs 342 crore, involves building a water treatment plant and laying pipelines to ensure canal water reaches households, benefiting surrounding areas as well.
