Chandigarh: Estate Office conducted a demolition drive near Manimajra police station, targeting around 30 illegal structures that had encroached on land acquired by the UT administration years ago.
Despite the municipal corporation being granted physical possession of the area, encroachers built shops and houses worth crores of rupees.
Many similar structures remain, and additional demolition efforts are scheduled for Wednesday.
Although residents opposed the action and protested against the administration, the presence of a large police force ensured the drive proceeded peacefully throughout the day.
The operation was initiated following directives from the Supreme Court, and officials evacuated shops and houses before demolishing the structures.
