Chandigarh, Dec 27: The Punjab government has released more than Rs 314 crore as financial assistance to support over 2.37 lakh orphaned and dependent children across the state, officials said on Friday.
Punjab Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Dr. Baljit Kaur said the assistance aims to ensure education, stability and social inclusion for children who have lost parental support or are unable to rely on their families.
“So far, Rs 314.22 crore has been released under the scheme, benefiting 2,37,406 orphaned and dependent children,” Dr. Kaur said. “This support is helping children continue their education and move towards a self-reliant future.”
The scheme covers children up to the age of 21 whose parents are deceased, missing, or physically or mentally incapacitated and unable to care for the family, officials said.
Dr. Kaur said the government views the welfare of such children as a shared social responsibility rather than a mere administrative obligation.
“These children are not statistics,” she said. “The Mann government is committed to ensuring that no child is forced to give up education or dreams due to neglect, compulsion or financial hardship.”
She said the initiative goes beyond monetary support and reflects the government’s commitment to safeguarding the dignity and long-term well-being of vulnerable children.
“The objective is to secure a safe, dignified and bright future for every child in Punjab,” she added.
