MOHALI, Dec 30: As many as 23 schools in Mohali, most of them government-run, have been selected for the National Green School Award for their work in promoting environmental sustainability, officials said.

The awards are based on the Green School Audit conducted under the Environment Education Programme of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, in collaboration with the Punjab State Council for Science and Technology, Chandigarh, and the Centre for Science and Environment, New Delhi.

District Coordinator for the Green School Programme Khushwinder Kaur said the results of the audit have been formally declared, recognising schools for initiatives related to conservation of natural resources, waste management, water and energy efficiency, and eco-friendly practices.

“The selection reflects sustained efforts by schools to integrate environmental responsibility into daily functioning,” she said.

District Education Officer (Secondary) Dr. Ginni Duggal said the award-winning schools will be felicitated at a national-level function in New Delhi on January 30.

“The achievement is the result of collective efforts by school heads, teachers, students and Eco-Clubs in fostering environmental awareness,” Duggal said.

The selected schools include Government Senior Secondary School, Kurali; Government High School, Joula Kalan; Government High School, Landran; Government Senior Secondary School, Kharar; and Government Middle School, Chachu Majra, among others.
