Kolkata/Chandigarh, Jan 14: Three key suspects, including the primary gunmen, were apprehended at Howrah railway station in Kolkata as investigators unravel the targeted killing of kabaddi promoter Kanwar Digvijay Singh, also known as Rana Balachauria. The arrests of shooters Karan Pathak and Aditya Kapur, alongside facilitator Tarandeep Singh, bring the total number of individuals in custody to nine.

The investigation revealed that the December 15 assassination in Sohana’s Sector 79 followed two previous failed attempts on Balachauria’s life. According to police records, the plot was orchestrated by foreign-based gangsters Balwinder Singh, alias Donny Bal, and Amarjit Singh, alias Khabba. One suspect, Harpinder Singh, died earlier during a police encounter in Lalru.

Mohali SSP Harmandeep Singh Hans noted that the conspiracy was set in motion as early as October 2025. During the months leading up to the shooting, the group moved frequently to evade detection. “From October till the date of the incident, the accused, along with accomplice Aditya Kapoor, stayed in various hotels across Chandigarh, Kalka, Zirakpur and Kharar,” the SSP said.

Pathak, an Amritsar resident with ties to Uttar Pradesh, allegedly fired the fatal shots alongside Kapur. They were assisted by Tarandeep Singh, a Sociology postgraduate from Ludhiana, who waited nearby on a motorcycle to ensure a quick escape. Additional logistical support was provided by Sukhsherpal Singh, the maternal uncle of gangster Khabba, who helped finalize the attack logistics.
