Amritsar, Jan 30: Punjab Police investigators received a set of requested documents from the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee on Thursday as part of the probe into missing holy scriptures. The cooperation comes after Akal Takht acting jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj advised the SGPC to work with the state government, resolving earlier tensions regarding the committee’s administrative independence.
The handover took place in Chandigarh under the supervision of SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami. This development follows a long-standing controversy that surfaced in 2020 involving the disappearance of 328 saroops. The current legal proceedings involve serious allegations, including conspiracy and the hurting of religious sentiments.
“All the information that was sought in writing by the SIT has been duly provided,” Dhami said. The SGPC president mentioned that the decision to provide the records aligned with the guidance provided by the Akal Takht Sahib to ensure the probe moves forward smoothly.
SIT head AIG Jagatpreet Singh noted that his team is currently scrutinizing the provided materials to determine the next steps in the case. The SIT was formed to look into discrepancies first identified by the Punjab Human Rights Organisation, which eventually led to criminal charges against over a dozen people.
“Investigation is still underway, and all the details can’t be shared at this moment,” Singh said. He noted that the SIT might return to the SGPC for more documentation if the current records lead to further questions during the audit.
