Chandigarh, Feb 3: A sudden return of dense fog and a sharp dip in mercury disrupted early morning routines in Chandigarh on Tuesday, coinciding with the first day of schools reverting to their regular schedules. After weeks of weather-adjusted timings, students were seen navigating thick blankets of mist and biting cold as they headed to classes during the early hours.

The Meteorological Department noted that the resurgence of winter-like conditions caught many residents by surprise. In Punjab, Bathinda was recorded as the coldest city with a minimum temperature of 3.6 degrees Celsius. Ferozepur followed closely at 4.1 degrees, while Chandigarh registered a low of 9.8 degrees Celsius amid the morning haze.

“The intense cold and heavy fog were quite unexpected given the recent trend, particularly as the children resumed their normal school hours today,” a local official mentioned.

In Haryana, Hisar emerged as the coldest spot at 5.5 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, the national capital, Delhi, also faced significant disruption as visibility at Palam and Safdarjung plummeted to 100 metres, slowing traffic and affecting the morning commute.
