Patiala, Feb 8: To expand its electoral footprint, the BJP is projecting Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini as a “local face” to woo Punjabi voters through targeted social engineering. The move comes as the party seeks to fill a perceived political vacuum created by infighting in the Congress and consolidate the Saini community’s influence in the state.
The strategy involves a heavy focus on rural pockets and the Kandi belt, where the Saini community holds substantial sway. During his tours, Saini has been seen adopting Punjabi cultural symbols and language to bridge the gap with the local electorate. The party noted that his presence is intended to mobilize the 1.5 lakh Saini voters residing in the Patiala Lok Sabha segment.
BJP Punjab spokesperson Pritpal Singh Baliawal mentioned that the Haryana Chief Minister’s visits are resonating with the public. “Chief Minister Saini strikes a chord with people,” he said, adding that the leader is highlighting the developmental differences between the two neighboring states.
Statistical data from the previous general elections suggests a competitive landscape in the region. The BJP candidate in Patiala secured 25.09 percent of the total votes, trailing only slightly behind the winning Congress candidate and the runner-up from the Aam Aadmi Party. Party strategists said the narrow margins indicate significant room for growth if the community vote is consolidated.
Future plans include a series of intensive tours across Hoshiarpur and Ropar districts. The party mentioned that by presenting a Punjabi-speaking leader who understands the regional nuances, they hope to present a viable alternative to the current political leadership in Punjab.
