Chandigarh, Feb 19: A two-year-old legal case against former Punjab minister Pargat Singh and several Congress associates is nearing a conclusion after the Chandigarh Police filed a cancellation report in court. The FIR, which was registered at the Sector 3 police station in February 2024, involved allegations of rioting and preventing police officers from discharging their duties during a political demonstration.
The protest was organized by the Congress party to show solidarity with farmers and to condemn the actions of the central and state governments. During the event, participants had moved toward the Haryana Chief Minister’s house in Sector 1, leading to a confrontation with security forces. While the police at the time claimed that some officers sustained injuries during a scuffle, the current investigation has led authorities to seek the closure of the file.
Legal representatives for the Congress leaders stated that the charges were always seen as a reaction to their vocal support for the farming community. They affirmed that the party remained focused on raising public issues despite the legal pressure. The list of those included in the cancellation report features prominent figures such as Sumit Singh, Khushbaj Jattan, and Lakhwinder Singh.
With the filing of the report, the judicial process now requires the court to hear from the police official who initially lodged the complaint. The matter is set for further consideration in early April, marking a significant turn in a case that has remained active throughout the recent election cycles.
