Chandigarh, March 19: A rare and powerful western disturbance is set to impact North India on Thursday and Friday, bringing an unseasonal spell of rain, thunderstorms, and a significant drop in temperatures. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) stated that regions including Punjab, Chandigarh, Haryana, Delhi NCR, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh should prepare for moderate to heavy rainfall on March 20.

Meteorologists noted that the current weather system features an uncommon linear trough extending across thousands of kilometers. This specific formation is known to intensify cloud development, which may trigger severe weather events and heavy snowfall in higher altitudes. Experts maintained that the structure of this disturbance is a departure from typical March patterns.

Daytime maximum temperatures are expected to hover between 18°C and 24°C, mirroring conditions usually seen in January. Officials declared a “sweater weather” alert, advising residents to keep winter clothing accessible as the region experiences a temporary return to cold conditions.

Weather experts asserted that the public should remain alert for sudden changes, including lightning and gusty winds. While the spell is predicted to be short-lived, authorities affirmed the need for residents to follow official advisories to mitigate risks associated with the turbulent weather.
