LEH, APRIL 27 — The administration of the Union Territory of Ladakh has officially notified the creation of five new districts, a move intended to decentralize governance and streamline public service delivery in the high-altitude region. Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena announced on Monday that Nubra, Sham, Changthang, Zanskar, and Drass will join the existing districts of Leh and Kargil, bringing the total number of administrative divisions in the territory to seven.

The Lieutenant Governor affirmed that the decision fulfills a long-standing demand from the local population and aligns with federal objectives for regional prosperity. He stated that the new administrative structure would strengthen grassroots governance and ensure that essential services reach residents in the most remote areas. The notification follows a previous approval granted by the Ministry of Home Affairs in August 2024.

“A historic day for Ladakh,” Saxena declared in a social media post, noting that the development aims to create new opportunities for employment and entrepreneurship. He maintained that the administrative overhaul is a landmark moment in the territory’s history since its formation in 2019.

The announcement comes just days before Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to arrive in Leh for a two-day visit beginning April 30. Officials stated that while the Home Minister’s visit primarily focuses on the sacred exposition of Buddhist relics, the timing of the district notification underscores the government’s commitment to the region’s development.
