Shimla, July 11: A massive landslide triggered by torrential rainfall has endangered multiple residential buildings in the Sanjauli locality of Shimla, sparking widespread panic among local residents. The debris came crashing down in the Bothwell area near the Government College, forcing emergency response teams to immediately deploy to the site.
“The structural integrity of several homes is currently being evaluated after a substantial portion of the hillside collapsed,” stated a senior official from the district administration. “Our teams, along with personnel from various line departments, are actively managing the scene to ensure resident safety.”
A separate landslide in Rajhana village caused severe property damage, partially burying and crushing multiple vehicles parked along a major thoroughfare. Boulders and heavy rockfall blocked the roadway, though authorities confirmed that no casualties have occurred. Debris clearance operations were initiated by municipal workers to restore traffic flow.
Further compounding the infrastructure crisis, the vital Sangla bridge collapsed late last night after being severely weakened by days of unrelenting downpours. The structure served as a critical link connecting Sangla with Chitkul, effectively cutting off the route.
The Meteorological Centre has forecast widespread rainfall across Himachal Pradesh, keeping a yellow alert active for Shimla, Kullu, Chamba, Bilaspur, and Sirmour districts.
“We are anticipating moderate to heavy precipitation in isolated patches of these regions,” an agency spokesperson affirmed. “Residents must brace for potential waterlogging in low-lying sectors, slippery road conditions, and minor disruptions to essential utility services.”
