New Delhi, July 17: The Central Government has appointed senior BJP leader Harjit Singh Grewal as the chairperson of the National Commission for Minorities (NCM). The Ministry of Minority Affairs issued an official notification confirming his appointment for a three-year term. Grewal, an experienced political figure and core committee member of the Punjab BJP unit, succeeds former IPS officer Iqbal Singh Lalpura at the helm of the statutory panel.
The development marks a notable milestone in the institutional history of the constitutional advisory body.
The newly designated chairperson becomes the third Sikh leader to lead the national panel. His elevation also marks the first time that back-to-back appointments from the community have occurred for this top post, following the conclusion of Lalpura’s tenure. Former Member of Parliament Tarlochan Singh was the first from the community to serve as the chairperson, while former Vice President Hamid Ansari has also headed the panel in the past.
The strategic timing of the official notification coincided with the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the region for multiple high-profile infrastructure launches. Grewal, who serves as a National Council member of the central BJP, has long functioned as a primary organizational face in the state. Political experts state that the move reflects a continuing effort by the central leadership to demonstrate strong institutional representation and solidarity with the state’s demographics ahead of the upcoming local assembly polls.
The veteran leader is well recognized for handling sensitive socio-political discussions under challenging regional circumstances. Party officials maintained that Grewal performed a crucial role in mediating communications and attempting to bridge mistrust between administrative bodies and agrarian groups during the height of the prolonged farm agitation. Under the same administrative order, the ministry also appointed Munawari Begum as the vice-chairperson and Glenn E Souza Ticlo as a member to complete the leadership restructuring of the commission.
