CHANDIGARH, July 31 — Agriculture and irrigation infrastructure in the Shutrana constituency received a substantial boost as Water Resources and Soil and Water Conservation Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal inaugurated key canal irrigation projects at Buta Singh Wala and Badshahpur villages. The newly inaugurated infrastructure projects, executed at a total cost of 80.35 crore rupees, involve the extensive restoration of canals, distributaries, and sub-minors stretching over 137 kilometers to supply canal water to nearly 68,500 acres across 56 villages.
The initiative aligns with the state administration’s overall efforts under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann to expand surface-water irrigation networks and optimize water resource distribution throughout the agricultural belt. Alongside the canal restoration work, an additional investment of 8.89 crore rupees was utilized to construct 53.9 kilometers of underground pipeline networks, extending irrigation coverage to over 9,300 acres across 18 nearby villages.
Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal asserted the government’s focus on agricultural support. “Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Punjab Government is expanding canal irrigation across the state,” Mr. Goyal stated, while reviewing the local projects.
In addition to irrigation works, flood-protection measures along the Ghaggar River near Badshahpur were reviewed. Embankments along vulnerable stretches have been reinforced using stone pitching and wire mesh at an expenditure of 2.46 crore rupees. To enhance monitoring during monsoon seasons, authorities have also arranged for the installation of a river water level gauge at Badshahpur, modeled after the existing facility at Khanauri. Shutrana MLA Kulwant Singh Bazigar expressed appreciation toward the state leadership, maintaining that the long-pending demand of local farming communities for reliable water supplies has been successfully addressed.
