No Shortage of Sugar in State, Uttar Pradesh Government Assures Public

Sugar mills hold ample stock, operations to resume early if required

Lucknow, August 22: The state government affirmed that Uttar Pradesh maintains a sufficient supply of sugar, urging the public to ignore unwarranted rumors regarding potential shortages. During a comprehensive stock review, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath declared that the state currently holds 179.38 lakh quintals of sugar across its mill network. He directed administrative officials to take immediate, strict action against anyone attempting to black-market sugar or spread false information to create artificial scarcity.

To maintain market stability, officials maintained that sugar mills can begin operations as early as October 15 if supply demands dictate. Stock records indicate that private sugar mills account for 150.50 lakh quintals of the current reserve, while cooperative sugar mills hold 23.60 lakh quintals, and corporation mills keep 5.28 lakh quintals. Furthermore, mills released 235 lakh quintals into the market during June and July, ensuring abundant stock remains accessible in the open market to easily meet the estimated monthly state consumption of four lakh tonnes.

In compliance with Central Government directives, strict inventory caps remain in effect to deter hoarding across the supply chain:

  • Stock limits prevent dealers from holding more than 400 tonnes at any single time, with a maximum holding period of 30 days.

  • Bulk commercial consumers using 10 metric tonnes monthly are restricted to a maximum 15-day stock supply.

  • Sugar mills must clear sold quota stocks from their warehouses within seven days of sale.

District Magistrates across the state have been instructed to conduct immediate physical verifications of registered mills, wholesalers, and retail warehouses to confirm actual inventory levels. Looking ahead to the 2026-27 crushing season, sugarcane coverage is projected at 28.14 lakh hectares, with anticipated sugar production reaching 90 lakh tonnes. Government figures also asserted that for the 2025-26 crushing season, more than ₹32,554 crore was directly disbursed to 48 lakh sugarcane farmers across the state.
