Lucknow, Sept 16: Uttar Pradesh has emerged as a leading state in domestic rooftop solar adoption, with solar plants installed on more than 8.24 lakh homes across the region under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana. The state has established a cumulative solar capacity of 2,769.59 MW, producing approximately 1.25 crore units of clean power daily.
The initiative has delivered direct economic benefits to residents, generating an estimated annual financial saving of nearly Rs 2,956 crore across the state. Official consumer billing data revealed that in June 2026, over 1.25 lakh households received either zero or negative electricity bills after supplying excess power back to the grid.
Financial assistance from central and state authorities played a pivotal role in accelerating adoption. Beneficiaries across Uttar Pradesh received over Rs 5,400 crore in Central financial support alongside more than Rs 1,900 crore in State subsidies, significantly reducing initial installation costs for domestic consumers.
Beyond financial benefits, state officials affirmed that the rooftop solar initiative reduces carbon emissions by nearly 36.6 lakh metric tonnes annually while saving thousands of acres of land. Authorities maintained that the expanding sector has created over 85,000 direct jobs, urging remaining interested residents to apply on the official portal before the scheme’s March 2027 deadline.
