Amritsar, Sept 20: A primary suspect in the killing of Assistant Sub-Inspector Harjit Singh died following an exchange of gunfire with law enforcement in the Islamabad area late Saturday night, while search operations remain underway to locate the remaining accomplice.

The deceased, identified as Deepak Singh of Mulechak village, came under police scrutiny after investigators analysed closed-circuit television footage, technical inputs, tower-dump data, and local intelligence following the officer’s death. Harjit Singh lost his life on duty near the Bhagtanwala grain market under the Gate Hakima police station area on Thursday night after sustaining a gunshot wound.

Officials reported that security personnel signalled two individuals travelling on a scooter to halt at a designated checkpoint at approximately 9:45 PM on Saturday. The suspects allegedly discharged firearms toward the team and attempted to evade capture, encountering a second security setup shortly after.

During the subsequent movement, the individuals again fired rounds, prompting officers to retaliate in self-defence. Deepak sustained bullet injuries during the confrontation and was transferred to a nearby medical facility, where he subsequently succumbed to his injuries.

Following the encounter, authorities recovered a .30-bore pistol, two magazines containing eight live cartridges, a mobile device, and an Activa scooter from the location.

The incident follows an extensive operational response ordered by Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav, who visited the city on Friday to oversee specialised investigation teams. Meanwhile, Assistant Sub-Inspector Harjit Singh was laid to rest with full state honours at his native village of Rampur Bhutwind on Saturday, attended by Senior Police Officers including ADGP Law and Order AS Rai and Amritsar Police Commissioner Harmanbir Singh Gill.
