Chandigarh, November 6, 2024: Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Raghbir Singh has summoned a meeting of Sikh scholars, intellectuals, and veteran journalists today to discuss the matter of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal, who was declared tankhaiya (guilty of religious misconduct) by the highest Sikh temporal authority on August 30.
This decision, taken at the Akal Takht—the supreme authority for Sikhs—stems from allegations of religious violations linked to actions by the SAD and its government during its 2007-2017 tenure.
These complaints were filed by rebel leaders from within the SAD, who have accused the party and its leadership of failing to uphold Sikh values and principles.
While Badal has been declared tankhaiya, the Sikh clergy has yet to determine his tankhah (religious punishment), which is anticipated to be discussed in today’s gathering.
The meeting is expected to delve into the religious implications of the allegations, with senior Sikh leaders and scholars weighing in on appropriate actions.
Former Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht, Giani Manjit Singh, is also expected to participate, along with prominent Sikh intellectuals such as Dr. Inderjit Singh Gogoani. Other pressing religious matters may also be discussed.
