New Delhi, 31 December 2024 – ISRO is set to mark a major milestone as the upcoming Geosynchronous Launch Vehicle (GSLV) mission in January becomes the 100th launch from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, Sriharikota, according to Chairman S. Somanath.

Monday’s PSLV-C60 mission, the 99th from the facility, successfully deployed two spacecraft in a circular orbit for the Space Docking Experiment (SpaDeX). Speaking after the mission’s success, Somanath said, “You all witnessed the majestic lift-off of the SpaDeX rocket, which marks the 99th launch from Sriharikota. We are now preparing for the 100th launch early next year.”

The PSLV-C60 mission placed the Space Docking Experiment spacecraft, designated A and B, into orbit. Somanath highlighted the mission’s importance in advancing space technology, noting, “This mission paves the way for future docking experiments, and in the coming days, we anticipate more complex SpaDeX missions.”

Discussing upcoming plans, Somanath confirmed a busy schedule for ISRO in 2025, including the launch of the navigation satellite NVS-02 aboard a GSLV rocket in January. He recalled the successful deployment of the NVS-01 satellite in May 2023, marking the first of India’s second-generation Navigation with Indian Constellation (NavIC) satellites.

Monday’s mission also demonstrated meticulous planning, with the launch rescheduled from its original timing to ensure safety. Somanath explained, “Our scientists conducted a conjunction study to assess potential proximity issues between satellites in orbit. Adjusting the launch timing ensures safe distances are maintained.”

The PSLV-C60 mission and the upcoming milestone underscore India’s expanding space ambitions and technological advancements, further solidifying ISRO’s role in the global space sector.
